Jay Alvaro

jay_1.pngJay earned the Doctor of Philosophy,  and Master of Divinity degree in Psychology and Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He specializes in marriage and family therapy.  Jay is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), member of the American Association of Christian Counselors, and a certified PREPARE/ENRICH Counselor.

As a Christian counselor, Jay believes in the foundation of relationships – loving God and others. He believes in the healing and transforming power of relationships, which is why he takes an exceptionally relational and dynamic approach to counseling. Therapy is a learning process and a process of change that seeks for the persons involved to better understand themselves and others as well as the interactions that occur within relationships. Equally important is to achieve enhanced functioning as an individual, couple, or family so that healthy relationships are established and greater satisfaction is attained. Jay will see individuals alone, though he will attempt to involve the entire family where appropriate and when possible.

Jay’s faith significantly influences his work. This spiritual perspective is integrated with the perspectives of family systems and cognitive-behavioral understandings of how people work.

Teaching and mentoring have been an essential aspect of Jay’s career path.  Jay was a professor of Psychology and Counseling at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, teaching at the graduate level for both the Master’s and Doctoral programs. He served as Director of Clinical Pastoral Training at Southeast Louisiana State Hospital; Director of two non-profit organizations focused on community crisis intervention and treatment for severely mentally ill; counseling and training consultant for the Louisiana Department of Social Services; professional counselor at First Baptist Church in New Orleans for over eight years; as well as working as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice. Before entering full-time Christian ministry, Jay served 9 years in the U.S. Army as an Engineer Officer.

Family life is a vital component and source of enjoyment. Jay has been married since 1981, has two amazing sons married to two beautiful, godly women, and he enjoys the blessing of three awesome grandchildren.

Jay is an avid reader, constantly seeking to continue to learn. He enjoys weight training and interval training as well as hiking, biking, and spending quality time with God and family amidst the natural wonders of the mountains of western North Carolina. Of course, he has to find time to feed his Hawaiian soul by occasionally walking along some beach experiencing the calming effect of waves washing on the shore.
